In 19th century Britain, the Victorian era was marked by significant advances in technology, including home appliances.
Before the advent of modern washing machines and tumble dryers, laundry was time-consuming and often done by hand. After washing, the clothes had to be dried, but space and weather conditions are often limited, especially in urban areas.
In those days, houses usually had high ceilings and small kitchen or laundry rooms where clothes could be hung to dry. The clothes dryer was designed to maximise the use of vertical space by enabling a lifting mechanism and a rope to raise and lower the dryer from the ceiling. This allowed laundry to be dried efficiently inside the stove, while reducing excess items on the floor.
This historic domestic solution can be found in the homes of vintage lovers as a decorative detail in modern dwellings, even in modern interiors – drying herbs or hanging copper utensils above the kitchen island. Some people use this dryer in the old-fashioned, space-saving way, and air-dry their laundry three times faster than normal.
